What is an internet browser? Definition

The use of web browsers , although we are not aware of it, is very common. We have them on computers, but also on tablets, televisions, telephones… Thus, every time we access the internet (except through the use of native applications), we make use of the one we have installed.

This serves, as we say, to access the contents of the network, acting as a vehicle to reach the contents that interest us. But, of course, to say this is an understatement. We are going to dedicate this page to explain what exactly this software is, how it is used and what it is capable of achieving.

What are browsers and what are they for? Definition

Mejores navegadores Web

A browser is a software used to interpret the information on the network that the user wants to access , so that the user can view it and interact with it.

What it does is transform the information obtained after a query to a remote server into something graphic to display. This information is grouped into documents that are web pages, including, hyperlinks, hypertext and other multimedia resources that are decoded for display on a screen.

We can build a very simple simile in which the sea would be the internet, the islands would be the web content and the boat would be the browser, which allows you to go from island to island, visiting them, using the water as a channel.

This is its main task, to allow the display of pages that exist on the network . The functions common to the vast majority of browsers, at least to the most widely used ones, are

Despite being, at the beginning, a basic resource, nowadays it facilitates navigation in a way we could not even imagine.

Currently we find that we can:

  • Save our favorite sites.
  • Consult the websites we have already seen (even knowing what time).
  • Synchronize accounts and view connections from other computers.
  • Enjoy content hosted on other servers
  • Receive search suggestions, autocomplete them.
  • Receive corrections.
  • Remembering our passwords on all kinds of websites…

Origin

The origin of this computer program is given with WorldWideWeb (WWW) in the year 1990, very graphic and quite sophisticated, but only usable in NeXT, a set of stations for education, something logical considering that we are talking about the first one, a test on how it would work. It has its origin at CERN, as part of physical-chemical research.

History

It was NCSA Mosaic that was first extended when, starting only on XFree86 Unix, NCSA versioned it for compatibility with Macintosh and Windows computers. This was very different, as it was based on graphical rather than textual reproduction of the results.

NCSA Mosaic 1993-1998

The fame of this one was short-lived (although it will always remain as the first version). Next came Netscape Navigator , available for most Unix systems as well as Windows. This was a paid-for version.

After that, Microsoft took a risk and launched its own browser, Internet Explorer , which was, without doubt, a benchmark, and was used by 95% of Windows users at its peak. It was launched for free. Here begins what is known as the War of the Browsers and which gave way to dozens of software of the type.

Evolution

It is at this time that diverse browsers begin to be developed, increasingly diverse, including from the most basic and functional to risky bets on customization and functionality.

It is followed by Safari (for Apple$0027s OS),Mozilla Firefox,Google Chrome and Edge, which succeeds the once king of kings, Internet Explorer, and which was currently receiving criticism from all sides, which is logical if we compare it with the competition.

But… how does a browser or internet explorer really work?

The operation of the browsers is based on a client-server communication with a DNS server where the information we want to obtain is located . This is done using the HTTP protocol (although some others could be used if the software supports them, that is not a problem). This provides access to an address, a URL. A first access to an “index” file is given, which is read and interpreted, and the other components of the site are also searched.

What it does is download a document in HTMLyXHTML , the language of web pages, and display it on your screen. As we have advanced in the subject, we have also been able to show its multimedia elements.

You can also access other resources, not necessarily web pages, although this is the norm. As a result, the software saves the files in temporary folders so that you don$0027t have to use the files from the web server that you had to access earlier.

At the same time the verification of each certificate and each approval on the page is carried out . Our antivirus will scan the files that have been downloaded to check that they are safe.

On the other hand, we cannot fail to mention that currently they will also interact with additional plugins or extensions to gain compatibility, speed or quality of navigation.

What features and functionality must a web browser have to be the best?

Navegador mas seguro

Like any other product, and especially when competition is increasing, the browser requires, in its composition, a set of elements that make it complete, effective and attractive.

Safety

Browsers are not exempt from vulnerabilities , and are very diverse, too. It is therefore necessary to choose one that works on security in all aspects: Malware readers of your operating system, hacked executables and components, interception of network communicators…

Privacy and cookies

Cookie, one of the best known computer concepts of the moment, but… do you know what it is? It is a file that is stored in our computer and includes information about the sites we have been visiting. Among this we find language preferences, access credentials, session identifiers, consulted content…

The purpose of this is to make navigation easier although, of course, there are other purposes. This abuse has served to recently revise the subject and now the user has easy access to know the type of information that is saved and even to disable cookies . The problem with this is that it is sometimes very difficult to navigate certain sites if we do so.

This makes it very difficult for anyone to refuse to use them. What you can do, of course, is delete them periodically so that no more account information is saved.

Speed

We are in a moment in which the use of the internet is constant for many people , even a necessity. Whatever the reason, the truth is that the user does not want to wait.

This translates into a constant struggle among corporations to offer fast browsers but at the same time to include the rest of the features and characteristics that are desirable.

You will find them balanced, fast and less complete and a bit slower but with all kinds of additional services. Depending on your needs, you will be able to choose the one that best suits you and that gives you the results you need at all times.

Download management

Downloads are a common occurrence when sailing, not only for pleasure, but also out of necessity in many cases. Access to offline files, documents to send telematically, direct downloads…

In any case, whether it is for pleasure or necessity, it is important to take into account the amount of data we download daily and, of course, being able to manage it easily will be important for many, many people.

If this is your case, choose a browser that shows you the download processes, the destination folders, the nature of the files…

Custom extensions

These are functionalities added to the browser so that it can be personalised and meet our needs in an appropriate way, i.e. small plug-ins.

You have integration with other services, notification display, pop-up blocking, search bars, trace removal… Honestly, there is for everything we can think of related to this type of software.

Be careful with them because sometimes they bring unpleasant consequences such as the introduction of advertisements or the collection of our data. It is also the case that associated applications can be used to access our devices in order to infect them.

Cloud Synchronization

Internet access through multiple devices makes cloud storage an increasingly effective reality.

Thus, certain browser information can already be stored in this way so that we can access it from anywhere we connect . There is even the option to synchronize your data to the point of consulting it, even in different browsers.

Updates

It is necessary to choose a browser that is updated often, i.e. there is constant development and work behind it.

Like all software, these also have security holes and you must never be exposed to internet criminals, so receiving constant updates is a prerequisite for surfing.

Don$0027t worry, because generally you will have the option to update manually or automatically , at your convenience and without affecting your browsing experience,

Private navigation

Although it is increasingly common to see it, it is necessary to indicate that not all of them have options to navigate privately . Of course, the tabs for this company collect much less information both personal and browsing.

Usually, privacy is on the other side of the scale in relation to the intelligence of the product. The more intuitive and satisfactory the results for the user, the greater the collection and interpretation of their consumption habits and information, and therefore the less privacy.

You will find, as you will see below, specific browsers for the user who wants to keep his privacy no matter what.

List of the best types of internet browsers used today
